blank.jpeg BLANK DOGS

To call the one-man project Blank Dogs prolific is a bit of an understatement. Although Blank Dogs releases have been of the small-potatoes variety (being issued on a number of small independent labels), they have been numerous and critically well received: 2007 saw a number of the project's releases on critical best-of lists, and more was sure to come in 2008, as Blank Dogs had prepared a slate of a dozen releases for that year. This rather unbelievable list included some 7" EPs, an untitled full-length, and a handful of singles anthologies on labels like Troubleman, Slowboy, and 4:4:2.

dumdum.jpgDUM DUM GIRLS

As Nate William's solo bedroom project Wavves has gained indie label and internet success, Dum Dum Girls is, in similar start-up fashion, the solo project of one girl with remarkable talent. Dee Dee, a librarian from LA, has the vocal quality and song writing sense to make music magic. I see big big tings for her, especially with Hozac, Black Dogs, Victim of Time (...etc) in support. Not to mention the direction of her sound is packed with extremely catchy charming vocal melodies supported by this slight power twee noise-pop rhythm. Think the haunting aura of black tambourine combined with the angelic allure of Tracy Tracy from the Primitives (but better).

pony.jpgPONYTAIL

A four-piece multi-style rock act that drew comparisons to Deerhoof and Ecstatic Sunshine, Ponytail released their first slab of infectious sugar-fueled two-guitar trad punk (Kamehameha on Creative Capitalism) in January of 2007. The Baltimore, MD, quartet featured drummer Jeremy Hyman, guitarist Ken Seeno, and other guitarist (and Ecstatic Sunshine member) Dustin Wong, all fronted by the vast array of sounds that was vocalist Molly Siegel. Winning critical praise for their hyper noisy live show that evoked elements of heavy-duty riffage, yells, growls, art rock, surf rock, ska, and Indian war chants, the outfit of youngsters appeared at the South by Southwest music conference in Austin, TX, in the early part of 2008. Their second album, Ice Cream Spiritual, appeared in June of 2008 on We Are Free Records.

meneguar.jpg MENEGUAR

The Brooklyn indie rock outfit Meneguar features Justin Wertz, Jeremy Earl, Jarvis Taveniere, and Christian Deroeck. Formed in 2004 after playing with various bands, Meneguar began recording their debut, I Was Born at Night, in the Brooklyn neighborhood of Bushwick that winter. A limited-edition pressing for Magic Bullet followed in May; by the year's end, Nicolas Vernhes (Silver Jews, Ted Leo, Fischerspooner) signed on to remix and remaster I Was Born at Night for Troubleman Unlimited. After an impressive performance at the annual South by Southwest conference in March, the newly minted I Was Born at Night arrived in June.

iddle.jpgIDLE TIMES

Anyway, Idle Times traffic in murky garage fuzz. Some of the songs have strains of traditional 60s rock, others have a ramped-up swagger like early 70s proto-punk, while others are as chaotic-melodic as early indie rock (and by indie rock, I'm talking Dinosaur Jr. etc, not the Arcade Fire). Speaking of Dinosaur, there are even some spiraling, scorching solos here reminiscent of J. Mascis' rawest work. Judging from these Myspace selections alone, it seems the songs are all clawing their way out of a layer of 90s grunge sludge...which is pure heaven for someone like me, who prefers his music to be unwashed and unshaven.
